Inka — Accelerating the latest knowledge and innovation in the field of outdoor air quality and population health (INKA-ILMA/ERDF)

The INKA-ILMA/ERDF consortium project, formed by four research institutes (THL, IL, VTT, TTY), aims to accelerate the emergence of a multidisciplinary cluster of knowledge and innovation in the Helsinki metropolitan area together with the environmental services of the Helsinki Region (HSY) and to launch its cooperation with the environmental authorities of the cities of Tampere and Kuopio and the City of Helsinki Environmental Centre. Eight (8) companies representing different sectors in the field of air pollution have registered for the project. (a) the emergence of new business activities, (b) the growth and internationalisation of enterprises, and (c) the expansion of the innovation and knowledge base in the field of air protection. The project’s concise and multidisciplinary enterprise-research institute-city-end user network ensures that all parties benefit from the latest research knowledge in the field. Based on the knowledge and the project’s own T&K work in the joint workshops, small-scale experiments on technologies can be started in participating cities to measure the physico-chemical properties of urban-air fine particles more diversely. Experiments will also be used to assess and reduce the so-called sensitive population groups (small children; cardiac, circulatory and respiratory diseases) exposure to harmful combustible and other fine particles from nearby sources.
