The INTERREG VA Priority 1 project MEDUWA -Vecht(e) will, with each of its eleven work packages, extend technical and methodological boundaries in water quality management, animal husbandry and veterinary care. MEDUWA thus integrates the INTERREG VA Strategic Initiatives, Health & Life Sciences, Agribusiness / Food and High Tech Systems and Materials. The 12 innovations generated in the project are distributed over several management aspects: measurement; visualisation and communication; simulation of measures; mitigation and prevention. For knowledge exchange and quality assurance the participating companies of MEDUWA are linked wherever possible to the participating knowledge institutions. In alle six work packages the German and Dutch companies and institutions will work together. The watershed information system that will be developed in MEDUWA integrates products and measurement results from the other work packages for the simulation of measures. The participating companies use the information system to test the efficacy of their products. All techniques and methods successfully developed in the project are exportable worldwide. Topic The broad cross-border and inter-sectoral MEDUWA consortium operates within a shared river basin to address a common problem: the environmental cycle of human and veterinary medicines and multi-resistant bacteria that are transferred via drinking water, food and air back to humans and animals. This environmental cycling of contaminants is expected to be intensified by climate change. Interrupting this cycle not only brings benefits to the health of humans and animals. It makes the meat export-oriented economy less vulnerable to increasingly critical consumers and more stringent international legislation. In addition, cleaner soil and water reduces drinking water costs and is also beneficial for tourism, especially water recreation.
