This created high costs, environmental pressure and supply-security challenges, especially during periods of high demand. The Crete–Attica interconnection changes this situation by linking the island more fully to the mainland electricity transmission system.

The project concerns a high-voltage direct current connection with a capacity of 2 × 500 MW, allowing electricity to flow between Attica and Crete. Macedonia through better urban connectivity.

Provide infrastructure capable of supporting future extensions towards other densely populated parts of the metropolitan area.

Key Features and Activities

Five new underground stations: Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini and Mikra.

4.8 km of new underground metro line, connecting Kalamaria with Thessaloniki’s basic metro network.

Fully automated operation: Like the basic line, the extension forms part of a technologically advanced driverless metro system.

Platform screen doors: Stations use automatic platform doors to separate passengers from the tracks and improve safety.

Integrated operation: The Kalamaria branch operates as part of the same network as the existing New Railway Station–Nea Elvetia line.

Additional rolling stock: Nine additional trains have been procured to strengthen the fleet serving the expanded network.

Accessible stations: The system is designed to provide modern, accessible public transport, including lifts and other facilities for passengers with reduced mobility.

Fast connections: The journey between Mikra and central Thessaloniki is expected to take around 15 minutes.

Target Audience

Residents of Kalamaria and south-eastern Thessaloniki, particularly people living near the five new stations.

Daily commuters travelling to workplaces and commercial centres.

Students and young people travelling between residential areas, universities and the city centre.

People without access to a private car, who gain a faster and more reliable mobility option.

Passengers with reduced mobility, who benefit from accessible modern stations.

Businesses and employers, benefiting from improved access for employees and customers.

Visitors and tourists, who gain easier access to different parts of the metropolitan area.

The wider population of Thessaloniki and Central Macedonia, benefiting from reduced road congestion and pollution.

Impact

A larger metropolitan metro network: The Kalamaria extension adds five stations and almost 5 km to Thessaloniki’s new rapid-transit system.

Major passenger potential: Hellenic Metro currently estimates that the Kalamaria extension will serve around 63,000 passengers per day.

Fewer cars: Hellenic Metro estimates that the extension could remove approximately 12,000 private cars from the roads each day.

Lower emissions: The same official estimate forecasts a reduction of approximately 43 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per day attributable to the extension.

Faster journeys: Mikra will be approximately 15 minutes from central Thessaloniki by metro.

Changing travel behaviour: According to the information provided for the August 2026 inauguration, the basic metro has already recorded more than 36 million individual passenger journeys during its first 16 months, accompanied by an estimated 10% reduction in cars entering the city centre.

Better quality of life: Faster journeys, less congestion and lower traffic-related pollution benefit residents even when they do not personally use the metro.

Economic opportunities: Improved accessibility supports businesses, employment and commercial activity in Kalamaria and across the metropolitan area.

Long-term urban transformation: The metro provides a high-capacity public transport backbone around which Thessaloniki can develop a more integrated sustainable urban mobility system.

The latest published Hellenic Metro estimates for the Kalamaria extension differ from some earlier project forecasts. For consistency, the figures above use the operator’s currently published estimates of 63,000 daily passengers, 12,000 fewer cars and 43 tonnes less CO₂ per day rather than older projections.

Recent Developments & Context

The basic Thessaloniki Metro line entered commercial operation on 30 November 2024, marking a major change in a city whose public transport had previously depended predominantly on buses. The 9.6 km basic line comprises 13 stations and introduced Greece’s first fully automated driverless metro.

The next major milestone is now imminent. On 26 August 2026, Hellenic Metro confirmed that all necessary authorisation had been obtained for the Kalamaria branch to enter commercial operation. The five new stations will open to passengers at 15:00 on Thursday 27 August 2026.

Preparations have involved more than simply completing five stations. During 2026, sections of the existing network underwent temporary closures and timetable changes so that the Kalamaria branch could be technically and operationally integrated with the basic line. Final works included signalling, supervision, fare systems, electrical and mechanical installations, lifts, fire detection and other safety systems.

The extension also forms part of a much broader transformation of mobility in Thessaloniki. To realise the full benefits of the metro, coordination between Hellenic Metro, THEMA, OSETH, OASTH, regional and municipal authorities and other transport operators will be important. Integration with buses – including new electric buses – and eventually with rail, port and airport connections can make the metro the central corridor of a genuinely multimodal metropolitan transport system.

Future expansion is already being considered. Hellenic Metro’s planning includes extensions towards the north-western municipalities, including areas towards Stavroupoli, Ampelokipi, Menemeni, Kordelio and Evosmos. The stated planning principle is to prioritise densely populated areas where demand for mass transit is high.

This wider strategy is also consistent with the EU’s continued Cohesion Policy investment in sustainable urban transport. For the 2021–2027 period, the European Commission identifies the Thessaloniki Metro extension alongside Athens Metro Line 4 as emblematic sustainable urban transport investments in Greece.

Thessaloniki is also an important transport and logistics hub for Greece and the wider Balkan region. Developing strong connections between its urban transport system and rail, port, airport and the wider TEN-T network can therefore increase the impact of investments made within the city itself.

Overall, the opening of the Kalamaria extension marks the transition of the Thessaloniki Metro from a newly completed infrastructure project into a growing metropolitan transport network. Cohesion Policy support has played a central role in making that transformation possible.

Relevant Websites

Hellenic Metro – Kalamaria Extension

Hellenic Metro – latest project progress and expected impact

Hellenic Metro – 27 August 2026 opening announcement

European Commission – Thessaloniki Metro and EU support

European Commission – Cohesion Policy in Greece 2021–2027

Thessaloniki Metro, youtube video of Line 1

"],"originalDescriptions":["The aim of the project is to extend the Thessaloniki Metro to Kalamaria, with a length of 4.8 km, with 5 new metro stations, as well as the supply of the necessary trains for the operation of the expansion. With the operation of the expansion, the Metro will upgrade transport and environmentally populated neighborhoods of the city, contributing to the further reduction of the number of vehicles, by about 20,000 IX, as it is projected to serve more than 50,000 passengers on a daily basis."],"startTimes":["2015-07-01"],"endTimes":["2023-12-31"],"euBudgets":[],"totalBudgets":["389890368,00"],"images":["https://kohesio.ec.europa.eu/images/ab2e1e23-9e37-46ca-9d52-46ff94d76b84.jpg"],"copyrightImages":["© Studio VD"],"coordinates":["22.9554953125,40.900670351994"],"objectiveIds":["TO04"],"countrycode":["GR"]},{"link":"https://linkedopendata.eu/entity/Q3835701","item":"Q3835701","snippet":[],"labels":["Struma Motorway — Lot 3.1, Lot 3.3 and Zheleznitsa Tunnel"],"originalLabels":["Struma Motorway — Lot 3.1, Lot 3.3 and Zheleznitsa Tunnel"],"descriptions":["The project Struma Motorway LOT 3 Blagoevgrad — Sandanski is part of the global project Struma Motorway, located in the south-western part of the country, which passes through Blagoevgrad district, with an approximate length of 134 km and is divided into the following sections:- Division from Dolna Dikanya to Dupnitsa — Lot 1 of Struma Motorway (from km 305+ 220 to km 322+ 000) with length 16.780 km;- Dupnitsa to Blagoevgrad — Lot 2 of Struma Motorway (from km 322+ 000 to km 359+ 483) with a length of 37.480 km;- Division from Blagoevgrad to Sandanski — Lot 3 of Struma Motorway (from km 359+ 000 to km 420+ 624) with length 65.090 km;- Part from Sandanski to the crossing of the border with the Hellenic Republic — Lot 4 of Struma Motorway (423+ 800 to km 438+ 500) with a length of 14.700 km.
